On Saturday 13th September, the Sirens travelled to North London to face the newly promoted Haringey Greyhounds in Alexandra Palace. The Sirens had faced the Greyhounds last season in the cup competition and the games had been very competitive, so they knew the opposition would be tough.

Period 1 recap: The Sirens came out to a fast start and caught the Greyhounds off guard with a quick goal from Esther Haskins, assisted by Mallory Davies. Unfortunately the follow up from Elise Willoughby was washed out. The Greyhounds then found their legs and netted 6 unanswered goals, with the Sirens also struggling with injuries during the period. Period 1 ended 6:1 in the home team’s favour.

Period 2 recap: Determined to gain back some momentum, the Sirens came out in this period with a new game plan, and some new lines, only to find themselves on the penalty kill early on, which the Greyhounds were able to capitalise on. The Sirens then suffered a string of penalties, which were successfully killed off by the Sirens PK units, only for the Greyhounds to find the back of the net again once back at even strength. Period 2 ending 8:1 to the home side.

Period 3 recap: It was Haringey that came out firing this time and managed to score 2 quick goals at the start of the period. The Sirens however, determined not to give up, fought hard and managed to end the period with 2 more goals themselves. The first, unassisted by Elise Willoughby and the second, a Bob Alder goal from a Peri Edmiston setup. Peri was unlucky herself having put the puck in the back of the net in the dying moments of the game, only to be beaten by the buzzer. Final score was 10:3 to the Greyhounds.

Message from the Coach: “It was always going to be a tough game against a strong Greyhounds side but the team showed grit and determination and fought their way through to the final whistle. They did everything I asked of them, and picked each other up when needed. This is a great team to coach and we are looking forward to finding our feet with our new lines as the season progresses”.

The Sirens next match is away to the Chelmsford Pythons on Sunday 21st September.
