On Sunday 21st September, the Sirens travelled to Chelmsford to face the newly promoted Pythons. It has been a couple of seasons since the two sides had met so it was hard to have any expectations going into the game. Pythons are a young, up and coming team, so the Sirens knew their work would be cut out for them.

Period 1 recap: The Sirens came out strong and took just 1:51 for captain Emma Toose to find the back of the net. The second goal came from Katerina Lossnitzer, a new addition to the line up this year. The Pythons used their speed well and tested the Sirens defence, but the game was held at 0:2 in favour of the Sirens going into the second period.

Period 2 recap: Both teams came out with determination in the 2nd period, but it was the Pythons who took the early strike. However, despite a string of penalties, causing the Sirens PK units to be put through their paces, the Pythons goal remained the only goal during 20 minutes of play. Period 2 ending 1:2.

Period 3 recap: The Sirens rallied in period 3, allowing only 5 shots on goal. An Esther Haskins rocket gave the Sirens that bit of relief that was needed at 51: 33, spurring on the team. Katerina Lossnitzer then sealed the deal with her second of the night at 53:21. The Sirens were then able to hold off the Pythons until the end of the game where it stood at 1:4 to the Sirens.

It was great to see so many travelling supporters, always good to see friendly faces in the crowd. Special mention to Grant King from 5-hole photography. Check out some of the photos from the game in our gallery, and on Grant’s Facebook page.

Message from the Coach: “I’m really proud of the team and how they pulled together to get the win. Every player gave 100% effort, and I can’t ask for any more. I think we are going to see a very competitive league this season, but I’m pleased with the work ethic and cohesion that the team are already showing”.
