Sirens travelled to Peterborough yesterday to take on the Penguins, where both teams took to the ice before the game to commemorate armed forces who fought for us 100 years ago, holding a minute’s silence with each Captain laying a wreath.
A short benched Sirens took the lead very early in the game with a well worked goal breaking out from the defensive zone for Sirens number 10 Jodie Attrill, to put the ladies ahead. With what started as a very end to end game, the Sirens defence were shutting down the Penguins to minimise their chances early on. It was late in the period when Penguins went short handed, only for the Sirens to take their chance and score their first powerplay goal of the night.
Sirens took the second period by the scruff of the neck with Jess Van Der Velden slotting one home to put the Sirens even further ahead. Unfortunately Penguin, Leah De Mar received 2 + 2 for roughing which gave Sirens the man advantage once again. Sirens utilized this and scored a further two more powerplay goals to ensure the game was theirs. Penguins did take a short handed goal which was unassisted by Stacie Horn. It didn’t stop the Sirens cranking up the pressure with more goals, including those from Aniko Gáal and Jodie Milsom.
The third period brought more Sirens offensive action and not forgetting some great defensive play to steer the Penguins wide, cutting down their chances. Netminder Gerry Park made some great saves to keep the Penguins out, finishing with a 95% save percentage. Sirens scored a further few goals with Emma Toose backhanding a beauty past the netminder and also Angela Holland assisting Jodie Attrill, resulting in Angela securing her first point in ladies ice hockey! However, at 59.59 on the clock, with Sirens well ahead, Penguins who played a hard fought game throughout, had the last say with captain Claire Ledbury scoring their second and the final goal of the game.
